Opened in December 2017, CAUSE | EFFECT is a vibrant ode to the stunning natural beauty of Cape Town, drawing inspiration from the region’s oceans, mountains, fynbos, and vineyards. Our cocktails are not just drinks—they are immersive experiences designed to be seen, touched, smelled, and savoured. Driven by creativity, our seasonally evolving menu showcases local ingredients and inventive techniques. From fynbos-infused Vermouth to meticulously crafted brandy-based cocktails, each drink tells a story of South Africa’s rich landscape and heritage.
MEET THE TEAM
The essential ingredient is our team members – most of our staff are career bartenders and waiters, ready to provide great service in a fun environment. CAUSE | EFFECT also runs a program for previously disadvantaged persons – a lot of our team members come from this program where we have trained them to become hospitality leaders. We are committed to training 20 people per year in this unique bar training program, please contact us if you have a person in mind.
Kurt Schlechter
Kurt Schlechter is the visionary founder of CAUSE | EFFECT, a concept that has redefined the cocktail experience. Recognized globally, Kurt was named one of the Top 100 most influential people in the industry by Drinks International Magazine for 5 consecutive years. An award-winning bartender and drinks consultant, Kurt is a fierce advocate for potstill brandies and is deeply passionate about delivering exceptional service, spirits, and cocktails. With a wealth of experience, training bartenders across Africa—literally from Cape Town to Cairo—Kurt balances his time between managing the four branches of CAUSE | EFFECT and elevating the craft of bartending throughout the continent.
Ruzaan Schlechter
Ruzaan Schlechter is the backbone of CAUSE | EFFECT, seamlessly blending her keen eye for design with hands-on leadership. As a skilled interior designer and decorator, Ruzaan is as comfortable wielding a drill as she is crafting the perfect Margarita. She expertly oversees day-to-day operations, from finance to stock control, alongside her dedicated team. With a kind heart and fierce business acumen, Ruzaan is the glue that holds our business together, making her our true superhero.
